Meet Dr. Stewart, Ph.D., CCC-SLP/L



Dr. Shameka N. Stewart, possesses a Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Howard University, Washington, D.C. Clinically, she specializes in Child Language Disorders and Juvenile forensic and assessment within multicultural populations and youth placed at-risk for delinquency or involvement with the justice system.

 

Dr. Stewart earned her Masters of Education in Communication Disorders - Speech-Language Pathology from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC; and her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science/ Computer Information Systems from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. Dr. Stewart is a licensed and practicing Speech-Language Pathologist. She is licensed to practice in various US states like Washington, D.C., Maryland, Florida, Oregon, Missouri, and some Caribbean countries.

She has been a speech-language pathologist working with early intervention, school-age children, the medical setting with adults/geriatrics in skilled nursing facilities and hospitals, and in the confinement or carceral space for over fifteen years.

Dr. Stewart is the first and currently only Juvenile/Youth Forensic Speech-Language Pathologist in the United States (and quite possibly the world). At this time, Dr. Stewart's current research interests include increasing cultural awareness and treatment of at-risk/under-served minority youth nationally and internationally. More specifically, she focuses on language and literacy development and it impact on academic success and criminal thinking and behavior, and criminal recidivism in at-risk/disconnected African-American and Caribbean youth with cognitive-communicative disorders.
